Hi Janni! Stell dich doch bitte kurz vor!

Hi, mein Name ist Janni, ich bin 25, auf Sylt geboren, auf Fuerteventura aufgewachsen und in der Welt zu hause. Ich bin Free Surferin, Model & Meerjungfrau. Momentan bin ich auch Deutschlands Erfolgreichste Surferin, doch Wettbewerbe waren nie wirklich mein Ding, daher gehe ich momentan meiner wahren Leidenschaft hinterher: das Reisen. Ich bin ständig auf der Suche nach neuen Wellen und Abenteuern.

Hi Janni! Please introduce yourself!

Hi, my name’s Janni and I’m 25. I was born in Sylt, Germany, and grew up in Fuerteventura, but I like to call the world my home. I am a surfer, model and mermaid. Currently I am Germany’s most successful surfer but I’m not really a competitive person, which is why I’m now pursuing my truest passion: travelling. I am always on the look out for new waves and new experiences.

 

Wie bist du zum surfen gekommen und was fasziniert dich daran? Wie lange surfst du schon?

Zum Surfen gekommen bin ich durch meine Familie. Mein Vater war früher Profi Windsurfer und meine beiden Älteren Schwestern surfen. Im alter von 2 Wochen zogen meine Familie nach Fuerteventura wo ich quasi am Strand aufgewachsen bin… so gehörte surfen einfach dazu.

Ich liebte es schon immer zu schwimmen und zu tauchen, doch meine erste Welle erwischte ich mit ca. 9 Jahren.

How did you get into surfing and what is so fascinating about it? How long have you been doing it for?

My family got me into surfing. My father used to be a professional windsurfer and both of my older sisters surf. When I was 2 weeks old my family moved to Fuerteventura, I grew up at the beach and surfing became a natural part of my life. I have always loved swimming and diving, and I caught my first wave when I was nine.

Was würdest du als dein Hauptberuf bezeichnen? Was macht dir am meisten Spaß?

Meine absolute Priorität wird immer das Wellenreiten sein. Alles was ich tu fliesst letztendlich in den Moment ein in denen ich eine Welle abreite, obwohl es nur ein paar Sekunden sind, sind sie für mich das schönste und erfüllendste. Ich könnte meinen Beruf nicht in einem Wort beschreiben da ich tatsächlich einiges mache. Ich denke was ich am meisten liebe ist meine Inspiration und die Energie einfangen, die das Meer mir gibt, und sie in allen formen weiterzugeben. Zu dem liebe ich es auch mich ständig neuen Herausforderung zu stellen. Im Wasser wie am Land. Das Leben beginnt ausserhalb der Komfort Zone.

 

You are a surfer, model and motivational speaker; an all-round talent! What would you say is your main focus job-wise and which of the three do you enjoy the most?

My top priority will always be surfing. No matter what I’m doing, in the end I’m just looking forwards to catching my next wave, and even it is just for a few seconds, these are always the most beautiful and satisfying moments of my life. I can’t really give my job a one-word title, because I do so many different things! I think what I enjoy the most, is finding inspiration and energy, which I ultimately get from the ocean, and then passing that energy on to other areas of my life. I also love facing new challenges. It’s the same out of the water as it is in the water: life begins outside your comfort zone!

Man sieht auf deinen Fotos, dass du sehr viel unterwegs bist. Wo ist dein Lieblingsplatz auf der Erde?

Das ist schwer zu beantworten, es gibt so viele wunderschöne Plätze auf dieser Welt. Zum Beispiel die Malediven, die super klares Wasser und schöne Korallen haben, oder Mikronesien… hier war ich letzten November zum ersten Mal. Dieser Platz ist sehr abgelegen, ich musste alles in allem 9 Flieger nehmen um dort hin zu gelangen,dann noch ein kleines Boot raus zu der Welle… und es waren kaum Leute auf dem Wasser. Die Natur war unbeschreiblich und das Gefühl, so weit weg von allem zu sein, das bekommt man heutzutage auf der Welt nicht mehr so oft.

Doch Plätze wie Sylt haben für mich auch einen totalen Reiz, gerade im Winter herum wenn es gemütlicher wird, ein Strandspaziergang im Sturm, sich dann wieder am Kamin aufwärmen… so etwas fehlt in den Tropen.

 

As we can see from your pictures, you’ve been doing a lot of travelling around the world! Where has been your favourite location so far?

This is really hard to answer, there are so many beautiful places in the world… but perhaps the Maldives. It has really clear water and beautiful coral reefs, or Micronesia, I visited for the first time in November. It was really secluded, I had to take 9 planes and a small boat to get there. There was hardly anyone in the water and the nature was indescribable! The feeling of being far away from everything and everyone is not so easy to find these days.

Of course, places like Sylt are still really special to me, particularly in Winter when it gets stormy. I love going for a walk and then coming home to warm up by a cosy fire… this is what I sometimes miss when I’m travelling in the tropics.

Wie würdest du deinen Style beschreiben?

Mein Style, ist wie mein Lebensstil ziemlich vielfältig und gemischt… Manchmal bin ich in Indonesien im Jungel unterwegs, mal auf Grossen Shows in Deutschland wo viele Medien sind, da ich meistens lange unterwegs bin auf meinen Reisen ist in meinem Koffer von allem etwas dabei. Doch egal ob Casual oder Abendgaderobe, bei meinen Klamotten sollte immer meine Persönlichkeit durchscheinen, es sollte immer ein wenig raffiniert und vorallem auch sexy sein… das leben ist viel zu kurz um sich zu verstecken! :-)

How would you describe your style?

My style is like my lifestyle, diverse and mixed. Sometimes I could be in the Indonesian jungle, and then be invited to a big show in Germany and so would be travelling for a longtime, so there is always a big mix of everything in my suitcase. Whether it’s casual or dressy, my clothing will always reflect my personality, I like it to be a little bit refined and always sexy. Life is way too short to hide yourself away.

 

Welche Cap Brand ist dein fav?

Am liebsten ziehe ich Caps von Chiemsee an,meistens trage sie auf meinen Surftrips oder manchmal sogar auch beim Surfen selbst, um meine Augen vor der Sonne zu schützen. Da passt es super.

Which cap brand is your favourite?

I love wearing caps from Chiemsee, I wear these a lot on my surf trips and also when I’m surfing to protect my eyes from the sun. They fit perfectly.

 

Welche Musik hörst du gerne am Strand?

Am liebsten höre ich etwas in die Electro Richtung, doch ich höre auch unheimlich gerne 80’s Musik :-) Ein lied das ich auf meinen Surftrips immer gerne höre ist “Help Me Lose My Mind”  (feat. London Grammar) von Disclosure.

What kind of music do you listen to on the beach?

I really enjoy electronic stuff, but I also love listening to 80’s music. One of my favourite songs to listen to on surfing trips is “Help Me Lose My Mind” (feat. London Grammar) by Disclosure.

Welches Konzert hast du als letztes besucht?

Als letztes war ich bei einer Lokalen Band in Mikronesien die Reggae Musik gemacht haben, da es dort so gut wie nichts gibt war es echt unerwartet und hatte auf jeden fall Flair. :-)

Als letztes grosses Festival habe ich das Balaton Sound in Ungarn besucht, letzten Sommer, da wohnt meine beste Freundin und Surferin Sylvi, mit der ich um die Welt Reise. Es war mein erstes Mal in Ungarn und es hat mir unglaublich gut gefallen!

Tell me the last concert you went to?

The last concert I went to was in Micronesia, it was a local reggae band. They don’t often have a lot of musicians performing there, so it was a nice surprise. The band were really good, they had a lot of flair.

The last big festival I went to was Balaton Sound in Hungary, which was last Summer. My best friend Sylvie who is also a surfer, lives there, it was my first time visiting and I liked it a lot!

Was hast du dir für die Zukunft vorgenommen?

Mich so vielen Herausforderungen wie möglich zu stellen, weiter zu reisen, ganz viele verschiedene Wellen zu surfen… ich bin einfach mal gespannt wohin mich diese Welle hinführt auf der ich gerade reite! ;-) Ich glaube, da sind noch einige Überraschungen drin!

What are your future plans?

I want to accept as many new challenges as possible, travel more and ride new waves. I am really excited and curious to see where this huge wave I’m riding on now will take me next! I think there could be a few surprises in store ;-)

Möchtest du noch etwas loswerden?

Ja, natürlich! Ich möchte einfach hier an dieser stelle mal allen Mut machen, die für ihre eigenen Träume kämpfen, die zu sich stehen und die sich trauen, anders zu sein. Die Ihren Leidenschaften hinterhergehen, auf ihre Instinkte hören, die die Welt mit ihrem Herz sehen!
